Replacing the E21 chassis in 1982 the E30 chassis spanned 12 years of production and overlapped its successor the E36 introduced in 1990 by 4 years.
Early models featured the 4 pot M10 and inline 6 M20 engines used in the E21. The major update for the E30 took place in 1987 where the M20 engine was fitted with Bosch Motronic injection and the M10 engine replaced with the M40 engine again utilising motronic. The chrome bumpers were also replaced with black ones in late 89 and the rear light made slightly bigger during this minor face lift.
The E30 was credited with a spacious cabin and a light curb weight, this was due to the suspension design that utilize Macpherson front struts and rear semi trailing arms. It was also the first 3 series to receive a service light indicator and warning light.
The 325i convertible was the first drop top solely built by BMW closely followed by the 320i convertible. The early E30 convertibles were converted by Baur, a coach builder located in Stuttgart credited with early full factory authorization BMW convertibles (1602, 2002 and E21s). To strengthen the chassis and reduce scuttle shake BMW added plates to the front suspension turrets and built in chassis beams down the length of the car helping to reduce flex or twist in the chassis after removing the metal roof.
The Design Edition models were limited to only 200 examples – 150 in Blue and 50 in Green. Besides the bold bodywork these limited editions feature unique pinstripe Recaro interiors, 15 inch BBS alloys, M sport steering wheel and gearknob. A firm favourite with BMW enthusiasts the E30s shape is a timeless classic sure to be admired for another 20 years.

Finished in Electric Neon blue, this ever popular E30 special edition presents consistently well with a high shine throughout. The body is in excellent condition with weak points such as the scuttle panel and rear number plate light surround clear of cosmetic or structural damage, whilst chassis rails, lower body and sills are very sound.
Fit and finish of the rubbers and plastics is excellent, with lights clear and chip free.
The jewel in the Design edition crown simply must be the Motorsport derived pattern of the seats and door cards; very jazzy! Finished in matching blue piping, the seats show excellent shape and contour and have fortunately survived without stains or marks. Carpets and mats are also very clean with good fit and finish. Entertainment has been upgraded with a JVC head unit that offers some modern day connectivity courtesy of an Aux In with cable.
The electric hood remains as new having had a complete overhaul in the summer of 2015.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 1.8 engine is certainly keen to please and matched to a close ratio 5 speed gearbox the car makes effortless progress.
Quiet and economical, the engine has huge folder chock full of receipts for servicing with the main agent over the years with the last cambelt / oil service two summers ago.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Sporting the classic and original BBS cross spoke alloys, all of which are fitted with matching Pirelli P6000 tyres.
The alloys remain in good condition, as are all discs and pads.
This 1991 car has a box file full of invoicing for work over the years with the main dealer Castle Motors of York responsible for the first 15 years of maintenance.
More recently the car has been looked after by specialists, with the steering rack and exhaust replaced before a major cosmetic and mechanical overhaul with local garage NBA Sportscars.
Both keys and every MOT certificate from new are present in the history file.
