Every motoring manufacturer has a car that defines its ethos and undoubtedly, the 911 is that car for Porsche.
The 993 version was launched in 1994 and arguably is the prettiest, it was penned by Englishman Tony Hatter and bought the slowly evolving 911 range back to a purer form with smoother and more athletic lines. Famously the last of the air-cooled 911s, it had an engine note with a wickedly sharp aural quality that split the air apart as it spun up to ever higher revs. It was the first 911 fitted with a six speed gearbox and also the first series production 911 to gain the VarioRam inlet system.
The heart of the 993 Carrera is its engine – powered by an air-cooled Porsche flat-six “boxer” engine using a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) valvetrain. The M64/05(06) made 272 bhp through model year 1995. In 1995 Porsche switched to the VarioRam equipped M64/21(22) engine. Varioram adjusts the length of the air intake ducts in line with the engine RPMs enhancing engine flexibility and increased power to 285bhp.
The optional all wheel drive system bought a further dimension to the 993 driving experience. It was refined further from the original all wheel drive system that debuted on the 964, dropping the central differential for a viscous coupling which aided both weight and handling whilst being a simpler system. Handling was further enhanced by a completely re-designed multi-link rear suspension system which tamed the 964’s penchant for lift-off oversteer, whilst retaining the famed handling characteristics of the 911.

F8F8 designates the deep and beautiful hue of Midnight Blue Metallic. The 993 suits Midnight Blue particularly well, the colour showing great depth as light dances across the horizontal and vertical surfaces.
The paint is deep and glossy and the window rubbers are also in excellent condition with very few marks to show their age. There are very few if any noticeable chips to report and overall, this 993 presents in near pristine condition,
The cabin of the 993 is one of Teutonic efficiency and ergonomics. Porsche’s of this vintage were built solidly and this example is the perfect case in point – the switch gear for instance, feels beautifully damped with a perfectly defined moment and weight of action. The Black Leatherette is a wonderful match to the Midnight Blue exterior and light floods in when the steel sunroof is open, adding to the driver and passenger experience.
The seats are supportive and offer good location when cornering hard. There is little sign of use anywhere in the interior and the seat bolsters remain free of any rips or tears. The rear seats have clearly seen little use and can be folded flat to add further storage to the interior and indeed protect the leather.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Porsche are famous for many things, but their flat six engine is one that the brand and automotive world hold most dear. The technical specification reads as utopia for Porsche fans – six cylinders in a flat layout, a swept capacity of 3.6 litres, naturally aspirated and air cooled. Known internally as the M64/20, this 993 benefits from the updated VarioRam engine, which altered the length of the air intake ducts to enhance low and mid range driveabillty further.
The headline power figure is some 285bhp, and the sprint to sixty claimed in 5.6 seconds. Formidable figures still, let alone back in in 1996. On test drive, the engine feels very fit and potent, with a wonderfully raspy timbre as the engine spins to the upper reaches of its rev range. The sonic experience of the 993 is one every true petrolhead should experience.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 18 inch turbo alloys give this 993 the perfect stance. Pleasingly free of any damage, they present immaculately. The alloys are shod in a premium set of Michelin Pilot Sports with N3 Porsche ratings all showing good tread with a 225/40/18 footprint on the fronts and a 265/35/18 on the rear.
Visible through the spokes are the silver brake calipers that again, are in excellent condition and indicative of how good the braking of this 993 is. On test drive, the brakes haul the car strongly and arrow straight, giving new 911 drivers or seasoned campaigners huge confidence as they peel back the layers of the 911 driving experience.
The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms that this 993 completed production on the 08/09/95 and was first registered on the 30/09/95. It has had 5 owners in total with the last owner enjoying the car for some 13 years.
Incredibly, It has only ever been serviced at Official Porsche Centres – with 19 visits in total it exceeds the manufacturers recommended service intervals. It has also enjoyed a very thorough maintenance programme and the history file annotates the work done. As a brief list, this includes a new clutch at 46k miles, new front discs and pads at 55k miles, rear discs and pads at 50k miles, new ABS sensors in 2010, air conditioning condenser at 55k miles, engine mounts at 51k miles, camshaft cover gaskets at 62k miles and rear spoiler motor and curtain at 50k miles.
It should be noted that this is but a small sample of the work done and the history file gives a very comprehensive run-down of the ownership and service history with a huge amount of documents and invoices.
Serviced by Porsche Brooklands Service Centre at 62,920 miles, this 993 is on the button and ready to be enjoyed by the next owner.
